DHMH  Awarded $600,000 Traumatic Brain Injury Grant

BALTIMORE, MD (July 27, 1999) -- The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) Mental Hygiene Administration has been awarded a three-year, $600,000 grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration to implement a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) project. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the Brain Injury Association of Maryland (BIAM).

"This grant will enable Maryland to improve our capacity to provide integrated and effective programs and services for persons with TBI and their families," said DHMH former Secretary Dr. Georges C. Benjamin. "It will also help us to increase the understanding among the various populations affected by TBI, its effects, and the needs of brain injury survivors and family members."

DHMH and BIAM are in the process of completing a one-year planning grant in which a statewide advisory committee identified needed TBI services and developed a plan to address those needs. This three-year grant will use the plan to implement outreach services to people with TBI and their families and to create a statewide training program to improve linkages between the various public and private agencies that provide services. The plan also calls for an increase in the capacity to serve diverse and under-served populations of brain injury survivors and their families.

"We hope this grant will help survivors of traumatic brain injury to live at home and assist in their return as valuable members of the community," said Oscar Morgan, director of the Mental Hygiene Administration.

The Traumatic Brain Injury grant will be complemented by $300,000 in funding from the State, spread out over the three-year period. There are approximately 6,000 reported cases of TBI each year in Maryland.
